JLPT Level 3

From the year 2010 The Japan Foundation and the Japan Education Exchange and Services has revised the Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken pattern and have introduced 5 levels all together. Earlier in the JLPT exams there were only four levels namely "Yonkyu", "Sankyu", "Nikyu" and "Ikyu".

But according to the new pattern there are 5 levels namely N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1. The syllabus and degree of Level N5 and N4 is the same as "Yonkyu" and "Sankyu respectively. On the other hand syllabus and degree of levels N2 and N1 are the same as "Nikyu" and "Ikyu" respectively. The only level which is actually new is the JLPT N3 level.

The reason behind introducing this level is that there was a huge gap between the difficulty level of sankyu and nikyu. So to overcome this, the N3 level has been introduced to bridge the gap. As of now the Japan foundation has not specified the exact syllabus for this level. There is no proper course material available for the newly introduced N3, N2 and N1 levels of JLPT. We are only aware of the fact that the N3 level consists of some syllabus of the N4 level and some of the N2 level.

By now you should be very thorough with the vocabulary, grammar and kanji of JLPT levels N5 and N4. If and only if you have understood and memorized the syllabus of these two levels then you can proceed with the studies of this level N3. As we have already specified that this level consists of the syllabus of level N4 you have to remember and still continue with the study of grammar, vocabulary and kanji of N4. In addition to this we will be learning the previous "Nikyu" syllabus which has been included in the new N3 level. The number of kanji characters and the jyukugo will also increase. While appearing for the JLPT N3 exam it is very essential for the student to be well prepared with all the aspects of the language like vocabulary, grammar, kanji, listening, fast reading and understanding the conveyed meaning correctly.
